Distant space travel is a dream that requires never-ending research, incredible technology, and an imagination to match. But at top Russian institutes, that dream is inching closer to reality.

Born from the legacy of ambitious projects from the early days of space exploration in the 1950s and 1960s, Russian scientists have stayed at the forefront in the effort to find out what we can expect from a deep space mission and how best to prepare ourselves.

From the BIOS-3 closed ecosystem experiments dating back over 40 years to the ambitious MARS-500 project, which will complete the first full-length flight simulation to the Red Planet within the coming month, we take you to the edge of our abilities – and perhaps further.
